Somebody at work who spent their youth playing with cars (he was an engineer before going straight) has offered me a form of 'electronic ignition' for my Allegro as he kept hold of it after being on x number of cars but no longer has anything or is liely to get anything that he could use it on.

Rather than a replacement ditributer system such as the ones mentioned on here before. It ustalises the points as an on off switch but delivers the current itself. The theory being that by reducing the load the points never burn out and the gap is irrelevent as long as it can still open and close. You can also just unplug it and revert back should you have any problems.

Has anyone heard of this before it sounds pretty like somthing that would have been invented in the 70's! I just wondered what people opinions of it were?

On another note I've already got a clutch alignment tool in my work bag that he found in his workshop so who knows what I might get in the future! You mention you have an Allegro to someone and not everyone laughs!

Hi Phill,

Do you know the manufacturer's name?

These systems (often known as T.A.C) were some and some in relation to quality. As you have said the electrical load is removed from the contacts which means they will have a better life, and the engine should stay 'in tune' longer. The improved switching can give some increase in power output and/or economy and smoother running, as 5 to 10% misfiring is the norm with ordinary contact breaker ignition. Maximum coils output, available if needed, should be greater, especially at high revs.

Maintaining the contact gap is important in relation to ignition timing.

Merv.

OMG!!!! I bought one of these on sunday! Mine was made by mobelec. and has a switch on it to go between "conventional" and "assisted" i believe the market leaders we sparkrite. use google images to look for sparkrite sx2000 sometimes they mounted direct to the coil, or to the bulkhead, did the same job though

The unit is made from plans by the gentleman in question. I really would have no issues whatsoever with the quality having seen some of his work, he knows what he's doing and wouldn't have made one himself out of cheapness if he thought his would be inferior.

As its a plug in plug out type I think I'll give it a whirl if I get my hands on it. I'm sure it'll be identical to the ones in the pictures I googled, he mentioned that it was last used screwed into the bulkhead of a mini but could be clipped onto the coil as well.

I must have misheard it isn't homemade, but is in fact a sparkrite sx2000 which is now in my possesion. I'm picking up the Aggro tomorrow in preperation for this Sunday's show and might be tempted to play. If not i'll bring it to Peterborough for anyone interested to have a poke.

Thanks for all this info, it has prompted me to pop in to Maplin on Sunday when I'll be in town looking for a suit to wear to my daughter's wedding. It's a handy distraction Laughing

The Maplin kit is £9.99 code number VE00A, I'll have a look @ the enclosures (boxes) on offer & find a suitable one to fit the ignition amplifier in Cool
