Can someone tell me the correct type or provide a reference number for the points on my 1975 Series 1 VP. The points are incorrectly gapped and obviously worn and in need of replacing but they are not the same as the replacement ones I have ready to fit.
On the set currently on the car the 2 wires go to a flat strip which is held on to the points with a nut and bolt, while the cam parts are the same the opposite end where it screws onto the distributor body is a totally different shape.
I suspect the points I have fit a 45D distributor, does it seem I have a different one, if so what? |

Hi Chris,
Over the years there were four types of CB points used on Allegros.
Lucas 73/74, Lucas 74/80, Lucas 80/83, and Duceiller 77/83. Even this may not help as the distributor may have been changed during the vehicle's life.
To add confusion to the situation different manufacturers use their own part numbers, and these were changed at times also. I was going to state part numbers but there are so many. For one type I gave up after finding four different part numbers!
May I suggest you look at the 'Mini Spares' website under contact points and they show pictures of the various types, or take your car or points to a motor factor and identify suitable replacements.
I hope this helps you.

It may be a good idea to examine the exterior of the distributor body & look for identifying numbers etc so you can be sure of the model type, you may have to remove the distributor so that you can give it a good scrub before you can find the ID numbers.
When you have the model details give Earlpart a call 01773 719504, they should be able to help.
When you fit the new conact breaker set, don't forget to degrease the points tips (use meths etc then dry them) because they are coated to preserve them during storage, if you don't degrease them they will soon burn out so you'll be back to square one, cheers, Laurence. |
