Hi All,

Just to let you all know we have had an excellent response for this event to be held on the 24th May 2009.

There are members of six other BMC/BL car clubs booked so far, as well as a good selection of Allegros.

I am mentioning this as there are now only a very few places left and I have to notify the Railway of numbers at the end of this month.

I did hear that the Moskvich club were hoping to field a contender.......... Wink

The Russian carburettor had more 'flat spots' than East Anglia, and certainly would be no opposition to a good old simple and effective SU.

A certain Tara Green 1500 LE Allegro has received a carburettor rebuild today and the owner hopes to do more than the 38.5 mile/gall he achieved on the last Economy Run.

With lucky and wise BMC/BL owners driving 1100s, Metros, Maestros, a Maxi, a Maestro, MG Midgets, a Triumph 1300 and possibly a Mini, it is up to the Allegro Owners to show what their cars can do. Someone has got to break the 50 mile/gall barrier!

I have 'defected' to the 1100 camp for this one as our Son, now an ACI member, is stealing my Allegro for the day!

Well I am personally looking forward to a great day on the 24th and i'll be pleased if my A Series Automatic Metro achieves 30mph let alone 50mph!

I am pretty confident Gladys gets about 42-45 mpg during the show season so I am sure one of the A+ 1300 Allegros will break the 50mpg barrier this time

3rd July 1938 near Grantham - LNER Mallard with driver Joseph Duddington at the controls establishes a new steam train speed record of 126 mile/hr!

6th May 1954 at Oxford - (Sir) Roger Bannister became the first man to run a sub four minute mile in 3 min. 59.4 s.

15th October 1997 at Black Rock, Nevada, USA - Andy Cripps (sorry) Green broke the land speed record at 760.343 mile/hr.

24th May 2009 at Ropley. - Who will achieve 50 mile/gall or more in an Allegro? Will it be James or Mike (both so near last year) or owners from Ashby-de-la-Zouch or Reading or from East Sussex or elsewhere? Is it true that Ladbroke's are taking bets? Will the many Allegros taking part be shamed by the Metro owners or owners from any of the other car clubs represented?

Seriously though, there are now only four places left to reach the maximum we can take and I need to know by the 31st March if you can make it.

Dare I lash a series 3 front spoiler on to the front of my series 2, to gain a few more precious mpg??

What will it be Paul, extra or reduced weight and/or improved aerodynamics?
I did wonder about wearing an aerodynamic cycling helmets, but could not make up my mind if it would help or not.
Perhaps I will just stick to lightweigh clothing and no underwear instead.

I hope this is not too much information but.....

We have to limit the number of cars on the 24th May, due to the size of the car park and the practicalities at the fuel station. Today I have had four requests to take part from Marina and Metro owners! It is good that we will have visitors from seven other car clubs joining us, as cooperation between respective BMC/BL Clubs can surely only be a good thing. Suspecting it could be popular I only notified four car clubs! It would have been nice to have invited others but........

I am mentioning this for two reasons:
1) Any more applications will have to go on a waiting list.
2) If you are booked in and will not be able to attend I would be grateful if you could notify me ASAP.

Hi All,
Don & I are off soon to do the final checks of the venue, petrol station and route etc.
The weather is good, and we look forward to seeing you all at Ropley tomorrow! The A31 is going to be 'alive' with classic BMC/BL cars.
I have a very strong feeling one or more Allegros WILL crack the 50 mile/gall barrier!

Many thanks to Mervyn and your team for another great event. We really enjoyed ourselves even though it seems that we only bettered the Land Rover this year! A good choice of venue with plenty of interest. It would have been nice to have been able to stay longer.

Poor excuses time: -
On the economy run I held our speed to around 50 for most of the time and we got a measely 37 mpg. On the journey home we travelled much of the time at speeds of 65-70mph and then had to face some congestion passing through London. We brim-filled again and checked our consumption:- 42.6mpg!

All along we had wished that an Allegro or two would crack the 50 mile/gall barrier. Did we achieve this aim?

In fact FIVE ALLEGROS exceeded this mile/gall figure!!!!

I would like to add my appreciation of Sundays event and congratulate mervyn , his good lady and helpers , on a really thoughtfully organised event. As ever it was friendly and very enjoyable. The choice of location was great too.

I'm sure its not a 5 min job to plan and undertake such an event and i'm sure all who attended are gratful of mervs efforts.
