I'm posting this as it may be of help to somebody, someday!
When I reassembled my car during it's restoration, I found that the direction indicators worked perfectly fine, but that the hazards didn't. There was an intermittent quiet 'tick', not was loud as it should have been, and it was totally unpredictable. This situation did override the direction indicators when the indicator switch was up or down and the hazards switch subsequently pressed.
I tried swapping the flasher unit (it was the correct type) for a known working one, and then swapping the switch (for a known working one). Neither made any difference.
At some point, the fuse was removed, and I think replaced with an another (not sure which ratings either were), which made the 'ticking' sound perfectly correct, but still the lights didn't work.
Eventually (and partly for another reason) I removed all the fuses, without noting what ratings had been in place, and replaced them using the correct ratings for the S3 wiring loom given in the owner's handbook.
This totally fixed the problem.
No other items were working incorrectly before, and I do not know what rating of fuses were fitted where, but it seems that the wrong rating fuse had caused this. I believe that the fuses had already been in place when I got this wiring loom from another car. I did find out that the fuse ratings for the S3 fusebox were incorrect in the back of the 1100/1300 Haynes manual, so make sure that you use another source of information when checking the ratings for S3 cars. _________________ Hell has frozen over...... the car formally known as 'Heap' is back on the road!
