Very pretty, although anyone that keen on a low-mileage model would probably also want it to be completely original - and if that's what you want, then it's missing a carb!

Hmm.....Carb missing, interesting point.
In May 1979 the HLS became the top of the range twin carb Maxi while the HL now had to make do with a single carb. These models were distinguished by satin black wipers and door mirrors.
This model was registered in March 1979 and has stainless steel door mirrors and wipers so it should be twin carb as you say.

Lovely 'proper' dashboard on that. Looks better than most Maxi dashs I have seen, has this been re-veneered with burr walnut? Though most Maxi's had something cheaper/blander.

I loved the original HL with the padded vinyl dash and Austin 1300GT steering wheel (I wish I had had the space available to accomodate yours when you sold it, Richard)
The burr walnut and conventional steering wheel arrived for 1979 model year (at approximately the same time as Hydragas) and then a few months later the range realignment with different trim and the HLS version arrived.
I would like to know the story of the car being discussed here....has it just had the single carb fitted, or has it even had an engine transplant? |

Paul,
I just rung Mr Goulding who owns the garage where this car is up for sale. He is right into Maxi's and he gave me the story regarding this model. Coincidentally he has 3 Maxi's for sale, this one, a 1979 Tara Green Metallic HLS with 20,000 miles on the clock at £3250 and a 1981 Bronze Metallic Maxi 2 HLS with 44,000 miles on the clock at £2750.
In the 1979 model year all HL's were still top of the range but for some reason were built with single carbs, he has the brochure to prove this.
This means at the beginning of 1979, if you ordered a brand new Maxi HL it could either be a single carb 1979 build or a twin carb 1978 build. I wonder if customers were made aware of this fact other than looking in the brochure!
This model continued until May 1979 when the HLS was introduced which reinstated the twin carb and kept the walnut dash. The HL retaining the single carb and received a wood dash. These models featured black door mirrors and wipers and a copper coloured front grill badge.
These models continued till Aug 1980 with the introduction of Maxi 2.
I love information like this, I'm sure Richard will find this interesting also.

| Fascinating stuff!! Gorgeous car, and perhaps clears up a mystery of a friend. My mate's Grandad still recall's the tale of, in 1979, himself and a colleague both ordered new Company Maxi HL's. The friend got a single carb one and my mates Grandad always claims that "they gave me a high model car by mistake as it had twin carbs and went a lot better than my colleagues....i never let on the company mistake". He has told me this story numerous times - perhaps this was what happened to him??? It was a 78 build!! |
