My attention has been turned back to my Bracken S1 1100 that's been laid up since 2003.
The long and short of it is; I can't get her to start. I'm experiencing the same problems that I had when I was actually using the car: Upon attempting to start it sounds as if the started motor is just turning freely, but not attempting to catch, just a constant whirring noise. I'm sure this sounds familiar to many of you. I am told this would suggest worn bendix gear in the starter but I've swapped starter motors with my other car and also tried a recon unti but alas, no joy!
I remember having to start the car in gear and this would often help it engage, but as the car is currently without a clutch this is not an option.
The only item that's remains original and untouched is the solenoid, is it worth while replacing this or am I barking up the wrong tree?
Thanks chaps,
Alex. _________________

Bad earth on the engine? A corroded earthing strap or mounting bolts would limit the current that could pass through the starter, causing it to spin much more slowly. Worth a try! _________________ 1979 Allegro 1500 S2 special 4 door saloon

Hi Alex, if the starter motor is making a constant whirring noise & has been examined then swapped for a known good one which is functioning correctly, it points to a problem with the flywheel/ring gear teeth.
Remove the starter motor, then looking into the starter motor hole in the flywheel housing, examine the ring gear teeth whilst gradually rotating the crankshaft (it may be an idea to raise one front wheel, & then select second gear & then rotate the wheel whilst looking at the ring gear).
If the teeth of the ring gear appear flattened/worn, the only fix is to replace the ring gear/flywheel, cheers, Laurence. |
