Has anyone else had problems with their windscreen washers? only one of mine has ever worked since I've owned the car and even that is now proving very tempremental. The unit itself is also pretty loud when you push in the stalk to work it Rolling Eyes

Cheers,

Stuart

Hi Stuart, it seems like the jets are blocked, the jet is a steel ball with a hole through the centre so make sure that it isn't facing the wrong way ie you can see the hole. Try using a dress making pin to clear the hole, if the hole is facing the wrong way use the pin to roll/rotate the ball until you can see the hole. If the pin won't clear the hole, use WD40 with the plastic straw (supplied) fitted to the nozzle & then squirt the WD40 into the hole, you may have to remove the screenwash supply hose from the tail of the washer jet nozzle to purge the WD40 through the hole but you may be lucky.
You can buy individual parts from Mini Spares 01707 607 700 www.minispares.com to suit your car as most of the bits are compatible, order a catalogue & choose the bits you need.
You can buy a washer bottle kit part number GAC9213X from Moss-Europe www.moss-europe.co.uk for 19.95, the jet nozzles may not be compatible because they are secured by nuts (not 'plug in') but the rest of the kit looks good, cheers, Laurence.

Hi
The jets are also available in Halfords, the correct push-fit ones - but be careful removing the old ones making sure the pipe doesn`t come of - they`re murder to get back if they drop into the jet holes !! If your pump is a Series 3 type ie pushed into the bottle, there is a compatible one available for BMW / Skoda apllications, you just need to alter the wiring connections to fit. I`ve got one on SWK and it works a treat.
As Lawrence says the nut type jets are no good as the shape of the underside of the frame around the holes prevents you from getting nuts on
Cheers
Alan

Are the one's from Halfords the chrome type which fits into a round hole or the black type which fits into a 'D' hole?

My series 3 Allegro has the washer jet nozzle fitted to the centre of the bonnet, it originally had a 'D' shaped hole. The spray pattern from the black plastic nozzle was a bit poor so I fitted a chrome twin jet nozzle from Mini Spares, part number GWW801, which improved the spray pattern. I had to make the 'D' shaped hole round & fitted the nozzle using the fixing nut, cheers, Laurence.

*Update* ..Cheers for the advice guys, only problem is that when I went to pull of the tubing to try and clear it of gunk it snapped the plastic 'nipple' off the pump! Surprisingly I've seen on the Halfords website that they stock a replacement, so I think I'll get a new pump and tube set from them. Must get some new bulbs at the same time as you can't see much with the headlights in these dark months...

I was going to tell you how I remove the plastic hose from the jet nozzle 'tail' but I didn't want you to set fire to your car, I use a gas blow-lamp! I carefully wave the flame past the hose I want to detach, just enough to soften the plastic hose & then pull it off. I do the same thing to the plastic hose when I want to refit it.
I suppose I could use hot water or a hair drier which is safer but the blowlamp is so quick & handy.
I use halogen conversion bulbs in the headlights, they have the original style flange but have halogen rather than tungsten bulb, they also fit the early Austin Metro, cheers, Laurence.

Well guys I've now replaced the pump but still no jets.I think the tubes must be completely clogged. Does anyone know how I could flush them through or even replace them? I tried purging WD40 up them with no luck.

By the way, heating the ends of the tubes with a lighter for a second is such a good trick for pushing on /pulling off the pump! (thanks Laurence!)

Hi Stuart, have you connected the pump wires the correct way around? Try switching the wires the other way around to see if that fixes it as the pump will only work one way, cheers, Laurence.

Check to see that the pump is working by removing the hose(at the pump outlet) to the washer jet nozzles & then operating the pump. If it is pumping then maybe the jets or hoses are blocked, remove the jet nozzles to see if there is a supply of screenwash(reconnect the hose to the outlet), if there is a supply the problem is in the jets, either renew or unblock the jets. If there isn't a supply to the jet nozzles then the hoses are blocked. Try using a piece of welding wire or similar to unblock the hoses/jets, maybe you could use carb cleaner to help dissolve any debris. Protect the paintwork from any solvents used.
