Hey, anyone who's going to the BMC/BL rally but who is camping on the saturday night: Are we allowed to camp on the stand this year, and are we all going to the pub for a meal again this year?? Charlie says to say hi to Percy, Lucky, and all his other chums in the club.

Another quick question before I go, I'm having alot of problems at the mo with horrendous watermarks on Charlie's paintwork every time I wash him, I dont wash him when the paintwork is warm, or on hot days or with very hot water, and I rinse quite quick after washing, but I then have to be super quick with the chamois otherwise the watermarks look awful, I've just changed the polish I was using, from Turtlewax original (green tin) to Autoglym Super Resin Polish, but the water marks havent improved and im also getting a two tone fading type look to the paint now, so I dont reckon Autoglym agrees with cellulose. Anyone know a polish which works well in hard water areas??? All ideas gratefully received lol.

Hi Caroline, we will be camping at BL Day this year but hesitate to plan any further than that for fear of tempting fate, remembering that we turned up at midnight on the back of a tow truck two years ago. Rolling Eyes

Hi Caroline,
I have just read your post about your paintwork, well many moons ago i worked briefly in a bodyshop and basically the paintwork on Charlie has oxidised,
what that means is the paint pigment in the paint has started breaking down due to uv light (sunlight),unfortunately there isnt much you can really do permanently ,you will polish it and it will keep a nice shine but if you get him wet the paint reacts and will go milky
I have a couple of cars that do that and i asked the same question about my cars
You will find colours like black, nautilus blue, damask red are just some that are more noticeable than others
I normally use autoglym super resin as it is one of the best polishes, turtle wax is quite good but it takes a long time to get a good finish and is a buggar to get out of textured plastics
The only long term fix is to save up and have a respray,
You find that most bodyshops will be able to mix your colour up but it will probably be a base coat colour with lacquer which will last longer than just a straight colour
I hope i haven't upset you by saying this, its just i have looked into this myself and all you can do is have it respayed as a long term solution
James and i are camping on the saturday and asfar as i am aware we are all going for dinner again
Take care, look forward to seeing you at BL Day
Richie

Kevin,

If you send me a private message to let me know your e-mail address, or e-mail the Quartic mailbox (quartic@supanet.com) I can send you an entry form. It might be possible to turn up on the day, but will probably cost more than if you book in advance.

Caroline,

We use Autoglym for our best cars (with a dose of the Autoglym extra gloss protection stuff afterwards) and green Turtle Wax for the others.
I would agree with Richie on paint deterioration, some original factory colours had fading problems with age, and if your car has been resprayed, the durability of the finish will depend on the grade of cellulose and thinners used. My MG 1300 had a bottom half respray before I bought it, and after a polish, it only lasts a couple of months before it fades and needs doing again, but the original paint on the bonnet, boot and roof will maintain its shine for well over a year. When we had the respray done on the Mini that we gave Teresa's dad, our sprayer asked us what quality we were after: some of the cheaper paints will not last much more than a couple of years. Needless to say, we paid a bit more and used a grade that will look good for many years.

Everybody,

BL Day is excellent for camping, (but try not to camp near the Maestro Club, some of them kept us awake till 3am last year!) and despite alleged vermin problems in the pub garden(!), the evening meal in the local pub is well worth going for.
See you all there!
