Hello to all members. This is my first Allegro, its a 1980 1300 mk3 saloon, first registered in UK EOL377V,and now registered here ZV32005.I will be 84 yrs old in 2 weeks and have mostly owned Spitfires,Heralds,Beetles,Rovers,Rileys,Mgs etc.as classic car hobbies over my life.
I am sure that Club members have a wealth of Allegro knowledge,so I apologise if any tech query of mine, sounds silly.Just 2 to start.
The oil filter fitted at present is Unipart GFE 443.Is this a good filter for the Allegro, and does it have a non return valve?
Where can I get a brass filler plug for the thermostat,to replace the substandard plastic one fitted,or even whats the part number?I seem to remember having one on an MG I owned, but not sure if it would suit.Ang have one for a Marina, but they dont know if it would fit Allegros.
Any advice appreciated.Joe. |

Hi Joe, welcome to the forum!
You have probably found answers elsewhere by now as your post is nearly 6 months old (!) but I thought I would respond in any case
GFE443 is the updated part number for the original GFE148, GFE149 and GFE166 oil filters that were originally specified for the Allegro range. None have a non-return valve fitted, as the filter is mounted upright and cannot drain back into the engine.
I am sure that the brass coolant filler plug available for the Marina is the same as the one originally available for the Allegro: it has a standard BSP thread and could even be available from plumbers merchants. The club had some in the spares stock many years ago but I would not know if they still have some now.... You will also need a new 'O' ring to seal the plug.
I think your car may have belonged to a club member in the past and he brought it to some of the shows in the Midlands: the registration number looks familiar. That would have been well over 15 years ago and I think he may have owned the car from new. If I find any photos in our collection, I will post them here.
There may also be some photos of John and his car in some of the old Quartic magazines. |
