Hi all,

I was recently at work, delivering a load of sand to a local firm. I noticed the garage next door. It was full of rotten old cars, mostly Rovers- P4's, P6's and Landrovers. There was also a Metro, Morris 1100 and a few MGs! Curiosity got the better of me and I went round to have a look/chat (but mostly a look) I got chatting to the occupier of the yard. He said that the garage that owned the cars had moved out and he had moved his engineering business in and ALL the cars had to go. Over the last month or so many had gone for scrap and what was left was only a small fraction of what was there originally.

Anyway, time to get to the point of the post! I spied an early Allegro 2 door on top of an MGB. It looked to be a very early one as it had crossply tyres and an early steering wheel (but not quartic) It was missing all glass, trim, interior and removable panels and was pretty much a stripped shell. It had an A series engine fitted and looked like an abandoned restoration project. It had had lots of welding done including new sills, wings and arches although it had obviously been left outside to the elements many years- it was absolutley rotten! The "new" wings however were still intact and didnt have any rust. The tie bar mounts at the front looked good and although rusted looked "recent" too. A lick of paint would have them looking like new. The rest of the car appeard to be a total loss- fit only for scrap.

The owner said I could buy the Allegro for its scrap value- £130. I could then remove the wings and tie bar mounts and scrap the rest, question is are Allegro wings and tie bar mounts rare enough or valuable enough to be worth going to the trouble? Id hate to see some "new" wings and tie bar moutnts go to the crusher!

Any opinions? (apart from this post being far too long!)

Hi Tim, I think that it would be worth the small invstment to get the front wings & tie bar mounts, sounds like you would also get the steering rack & front rear suspension components too! & don't forget the fuel tank Razz

The remainder of the car looks far beyond use, apart from the front wings and tie bar mounts it looks like its been dragged out of the north sea!

Tim,

If you could spare a couple of hours of your time to get them off, then definitely go for it!

Last time I saw some new old stock wings up for sale, they were around £100 each!

cheers

Paul

Wings are now getting very rare especially the drivers side Exclamation

If you can get one for under £200 you have got yourself a good deal even if it is used.

The tie rod mounts " hens teeth "

If you take the time to get them off & you dont need the parts clean them up & put them on good old ebay

Ill give the guy a ring then... apparently someone else has first refusal on the wreck although he hasnt heard from them in a month or so and the yard REALLY needs to be emptied. He wont let me remove the parts I want, its all or nothing!

Hes meant to be a funny old bugger, hopefully he wont twig the value of the wings!

Still waiting for the guy to get back to me... not looking good though, I think the other fella may have nabbed it.
