Hi All, i know this will probably be a fruitless request but i'm looking for a twin carb set up for my 1300 Allegro estate at a reasonable price. Anybody got some!!!

May I ask why you want twin carbs?

Hi, The car seems a little underpowered even though i have rebuilt the engine , fitted an electronic dizzy and rebuilt the carb. I thought twin carbs may increase it a little. I must admit i took the car for it's first decent run today and i was quite pleased with it.

What exactly was done during the rebuild? 'New' engines must be carefully run-in and they do feel tight and therefore down on power.

I would advise against a twin-carb setup as the single HS4 is more than adequate for this engine - twins would only increase the fuel consumption and cause problems.

If you really want to you could change the needle in the carb, but first of all I would run it in (and it'll take 750-1000 miles to do this) before considering this.

Also check valve clearances and ignition timing.

Thanks for your advice. The dizzy is a complete new electronic unit from powerspark not an electronic ignition unit fitted to the original dizzy.
New main jet, needle and spring have been fitted to the carb. The butterfly spindle was not badly worn.
I believe the engine is from an early series 3 fitted by a club member who owned it before me. I have set the timing at 12 degrees BTDC. I have set the carb up with both a carbon gas analyser and a colour tune unit.
Tick over speed is set at 750 rpm.

Based on what BMC did with the 'ADO16' 11/1300 range, twin HS2s plus a different advance curve and freeflow exhaust manifold added 5 bhp to the standard 1275 engine (Wolseley/Vanden Plas versions)

Raising the compression ratio from 8.8:1 (which is what your Allegro also has) to 9.75:1, bigger inlet valves and an LCB exhaust manifold with an increase in exhaust diameter and yet another change to the advance curve added another 5 bhp (1300 GT)

Finally, a 'hotter' cam with suitable ignition advance curve added to the 1300GT spec above gave an extra 2 bhp (Cooper S).

Run it on Shell V-Power. Paul has highlighted the compression ratio - these engines were designed to run on 97 RON petrol MINIMUM.

Advance the timing so it lurches and jerks on the overrun in top and then back off ever so slightly until it stops.

If you still want more poke change to a richer needle - ABB might've been the last I used on a 1300.

It will go like shit off a shovel, given some stick (which they can take - I've beaten many a modern Eurobox off the lights, I can tell you).

I am a lowly 1100 owner now, so miss the acceleration and 85MPH cruising speed!!

Do you have a copy of Vizard's 'Bible'?
