Peter, a friend and fellow member, has owned 'Dorothy' his 1500 Automatic Allegro Estate for many years. She is well known in this area for humorous notices displayed in the rear window.

Unfortunately Dorothy's automatic gearbox is unwell at the moment and at the very minimum requires new brake bands for 2nd and 3rd gears. The part number for both is DAM3851 (previously 42H909). Peter has contacted the Club's Spares service and a few other possible suppliers, without success. Alternatively, does anyone know of a working gearbox?

Peter is not keen on converting Dorothy to manual transmission, and is determined that she will live on.

If you are able, PLEASE HELP THE SAVE DOROTHY CAMPAIGN.

Merv.

What about the garage which Joe Lamont has just got his rebuilt auto 'box back from?

Many thanks for the suggestion. I have e-mailed Mackies and await their reply.

If they can help it would be a long haul from Surrey, but if necessary, he may have to do it to save Dorothy.

I have an entire auto box, presumed good; it came with my VP. Happy to work something out...

Hi, I seem to have missed this thread until now. Mackies in Glasgow are very helpful and I hope Mervyn gets a good response. If I can be of any assistance please don't hesitate to ask......good luck with the project! Cheers, Joe

Dorothy's gearbox will, hopefully, be on its way to Scotland today, and thank you all for your excellent suggestions.

I will keep you posted on the outcome and hope for Peter's sake Dorothy will be well again soon.

Yes, I have seen a photo of this car with the signs in the rear window. Let's hope it is back on the road before long.

Merv,

Did you notice the advert on this forum for a complete 1500 engine and automatic gearbox in Kent?
It might be a good idea for Peter to acquire a complete spare for rebuild or future use while he is at it.

My thanks to all for their help in this matter.

Peter's engine and gearbox is on its way to Glasgow and he hopes all will be well with Dorothy's autobox again soon.

Great news! Peter is delighted that Dorothy has been saved, and it's rear window notices will make other drivers smile in the future.

She drives well and the gearchanges are very smooth. A first rate job by Mackies in Glasgow.

Excellent news! Mackies certainly got through that job quite quickly! I was in their office last week and they were a bit concerned about the availability of parts in future. However, its at least two cars that have come back from the brink!
Cheers Joe

Joe,

If you can ask the for a list of all the part numbers they are likely to need, I will ask Colin Taylor if he can spend some time checking what the club has in stock: I am sure we had a few E-series autobox parts a few years back.

Note that the club can only sell parts to paid-up members, but if a member is sending his/her gearbox to Mackies for service, he/she can buy the parts from the club and send them to Mackies.

Hi Paul,
Yes I am happy to ask Mackies about parts they are concerned about and I will explain the Club's rules over purchases. I think there is mutual benefit if we get more cars saved they will get more trade.....cheers Joe

Some of the parts that may be needed in the future include:

2nd/3rd Brake Bands DAM3851
Rev. Brake Band DAM3852
Drive Chain 13H6943 (early) and 13H8830 (late)
Front Clutch Kit 37H7443
Top/Rev. Clutch Kit 37H7437
Gasket & Oil Seal Kit GEG808
End Housing Gasket 42H1291
Torque Conv. Oil Seal 13H7840

I hope this helps, but pattern producers did/will use different part numbers.
