Hi all
I need to get a new battery for my car, my current one has given itself up and I'm struggling to get it started.
My current battery (Banner) is 140mm wide but almost all modern ones I have looked at are 175mm wide, but I don't think that will fit onto the battery tray. The odd ones I have found that are under 175mm wide are then too high, as the bonnet will close onto it.
Any ideas, as I'm stuck until I can get a new battery? _________________ Phil

Hi Phil,
Standard fit is 038 I believe. Should be widely available.
Try your local motor factors.
Good luck,
Graham |

Make SURE the terminals are on the right sides, if you go to the motor factors as Graham said they probably still have the car listed so can sort you with the right battery.
But first, have you tried charging the battery and testing it? We could do with some more info. here. _________________ Austin - you can DEPEND on it!

038 is the standard Allegro battery, 015 is the heavy duty version.
Halfords list the 038 at £49.99, if you shop around you should be able to improve on that price. |

Hi all, many thanks for those replies, really helpful. Looks like HB0038 is the one to go for, I hadn't see that size listed on Euro Car Parts website, but I will ring around tomorrow.
I think my current battery must be due for changing, it must be quite old as it has the screw caps to fill with water (ie. not sealed).
Is any AH rating ok for a 1.3?
Many thanks for all the help. _________________ Phil

Hi all, just an update on this. I have been ringing round the car factors today (Euro Car Parts, GSF and Andrew Page) and they all say 038 is not recognised or is obsolete. Called into Halfords and they do have an 038 which is the right size for £50, although it is only a 35Ah power. Acccording to the handbook the 1.3 needs 50Ah (the 1.1 is 40Ah), my current battery has 48Ah. According to some forums on the internet the 35Ah can struggle to start a 1275cc in cold weather.
Does anyone have any idea if 35Ah would be ok? _________________ Phil

HB038 will be fine. Incidently, Halfrauds refer to HB038 being maintenance free but you may already notice it has a row of screw caps for a bit of maintenance
It's the same battery listed for the Austin Mini, so if you get stuck, any Mini specialist should carry one for collection.
Amperes/hour nowadays is 10hour rating as opposed to 20hour rating as per. Haynes manual etc.
Varta Batteries do a B24 45Ah 300 CCA (cold cranking amps) Black Dynamic is maintenance free & contains their unique Power Frame that is ideal for powerful starts. |
