Help!
Lavina's had a crisis! Can anyone help with a mainshaft and associated nut and washer, or even a complete gearbox, for a VP 1500?
42H482 Main (3rd motion) shaft
42H637 Lockwasher
42H638 Nut
Thanks in anticipation.
Mike.

I assume you mean manual; I'll have a spare 1500 gearbox once I finally get Rolf down to Merv's. I'm doing all I can to get this happening sooner rather than later, but I can't guarantee a timescale. Still, if nothing else becomes available... _________________ ...that's why Allegro will look as good 5 years from now as it does today. |

Cheers Richard!
It seems that Lavinia may well be needing a complete gearbox. My initial plea for a shaft was probably premature. I'll be in touch when I have a clearer picture.

Hello Mike,
Sorry to hear of your gearbox problem. Just to let you know I am in contact with Stephenson Transmissions in Preston (Lancs) about the repair of the original gearbox in my Series 2 1500 Special. That firm was set up in 1978 to repair BL transverse engine gearboxes - obviously they have moved on since, but I got talking to the proprietor. He said he passed on 8 or 9 gear sets for the 1500 gearbox to a friend in the trade some years ago. He promised to make contact and see if any are remaining. I am due to ring him again by the end of the week. I also have a Maxi 1750 gearbox which I had thought could be a donor of parts to the Allegro box, but of course we don't know what shape its in!
I will let you know how things go and please just say if you would like me to pass on the contact, cheers Joe |

Thanks Joe, that could be useful.
I'm away from home for the next three days so please don't let anyone interpret a lack of response from me as my not being interested any more.
Mike. |

Fair enough Mike
I can't expedite things as much as I'd hoped, as the towbar I've been planning to buy is (I've only now been informed) made-to-order... Still, it's ordered now! Just another couple of weeks & I'll finally be where I wanted 2 months ago _________________ ...that's why Allegro will look as good 5 years from now as it does today. |

Hello Mike,
As promised Stephenson Transmissions got back to me and they suggest I take my two gearboxes to Alan Voigt Transmissions in Wallasey on the Wirral. I've spoken to Alan Voigt and he says they have the tools, baulk rings and gear sets to repair my gearbox. I'm due to take the gearboxes to him on Tuesday next week........I'll keep you posted about how it goes! cheers Joe |

Good luck Joe.
Hopefully I'll know tomorrow evening if I've secured a good replacement box.

Well, now I know and the news is not good.
I'm still looking for an E series box.

Ah, it had the Maxi 1500 gearing after all? Well you're still welcome to the one coming out of Rolf, but you'll have to check with Merv to see if it's practical to have both cars on site! _________________ ...that's why Allegro will look as good 5 years from now as it does today. |

Hello Mike,
I don't know if you have solved your gearbox problem, but I have now delivered my 2 gearboxes to Alan Voigts on the Wirral. He says they hope to repair the Allegro box without recourse to the Maxi 1750. I guess I need to wait to see how they get on. By what they described to me they seem to have many (but not all) gearbox components available. I am also advised to change or at least refurbish the oil pump before reassembly - while you are in there you might as well do it!
cheers Joe |

Many, many thanks to Peter for finding Lavinia a gearbox, and many, many thanks to Merv for fitting it.
Lavinia is back on the road and is now home. Hooray!
Looking forward to Capel Manor.
