Id like to replce the coil on my car but am unsure whether its a balasted one or not? (how would i know?) Any ideas? Its an early 1975 Series 1 1100 A series. I was thinking eg:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Austin-1100-Allegro-Maxi-Mini-12-v-Coil-New-/140834741308?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item20ca679c3c

or is there any merit in:

Russell,

Your coils should be non-ballasted with a primary resistance of 3 to 3.4 ohms. If you have an ohm-meter I would check the primary resistance of your existing coil, assuming it is the original, to be 100% sure. A sports coil is unnecessary and will reduce the contact breaker life. The 'old' Lucas number was LA12

Far be it for me to offer advice, but I would steer clear of e-bay for such an item, as so much of the stuff appears to be rubbish or faulty. Many garages will not fit parts that customers have purchased from such a source, as it usually ends in tears.

You would be better to go to a motor factor or even Halfords, but don't expect staff at the latter to even know what an Allegro is!

Merv.

I'm fine thank you Russell.

Off to a car show at Knebworth with the North Thames group of the Allegro Club tomorrow, and then to another show on Monday. Busy but enjoyable time!

All the best,

Merv.
