This afternoon I started to look at the fog lights on my Allegro 1500 Special, RKB 143T. They were disconnected just behind the switch, so that was quite easily put right. The result was a fine beam from the offside light but nothing from the nearside one. I started to investigate the light thinking this might just be a blown bulb. There things became more difficult. I thought there would be a bulb holder as per the Handbook. I have Handbooks for model years 1977 and 78 and they both show the same set up:

However, my light appears to be different and looks to me like some kind of sealed unit:

I think you can just see at the bottom of this picture the wire runs directly into the light unit............please can I draw on others expertise here? Does this need a new light unit or can the unit be dissassembled? (I could see a small louvre where on could force open the unit but it did not look quite like a sensible course of action! Any help would be gratefully received, cheers Joe |

Joe,
You (and the diagram) are actually right. The front rim unclips from the 'bucket' section that the wire goes into, enabling you to gain access to the back of the lamp to remove the bulb.
The main thing you need to beware of is the risk of damaging the two pivots that allow the 'bucket' to rock in the plastic surround. They are made of a rubber-based material and deteriorate with age.
If the worst happens, you can find advice on repairs/replacement elsewhere on the forum.
Before opening up the lamp, however, I would advise checking the connection where the live feed to the lamp joins the loom below the radiator, also the earth connection at this point.
HTH

| Paul, Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. I checked the connections as you suggested, but with no luck, and then I took the bulb out. It looked pristine and not at all like a blown bulb! Thank you for the tip about items on the forum, because that led me to Colin Taylor's ingenious solution to the collapse of the mounting hinges. I will certainly try numberplate nuts and bolts to secure the fog light! I returned to the connections, but still had no luck, but I will persevere! Many thanks Joe |

I put some time in today and took apart all the connections and rubbed the connectors back to clean metal. I invested in a new bulb and some numberplate nuts and bolts. A pair of nuts a bolts make very good replacement pivots for the fog light without too much metal bending. Thankyou for the help from the forum! cheers Joe |
