Yesterday I made one of my infrequent visits to Brian the VP, tucked away in a family friend's garage since October 2009. Due to the position of the sun it shone well into the engine bay and highlighted something I hadn't seen before.
Some time before it's hibination it had a recon steering rack fitted, what I noticed was both rack gaiters were very twisted tightly round the end of the rack to the extent that either the rubber was turning white or the grease was being squeezed out! What would cause this to happen and could this be the reason the steering felt so odd during the short time I drove the car afterwards? |

I have found that when a garage has adjusted the tracking, they have not always straightened up the gaiters afterwards. I believe this led to premature wear/cracking/crazing of one of my gaiters, so I had to replace it.
