I'm sorry if this has already been discussed, but I have an aversion to forum search things (never got the desired result even when I know what I'm searching for is on the forum! Rolling Eyes ).

Anyway. What tyres do I need? Any recommendations? Budget brands? etc etc

Thanks!

I always went for the cheap & cheerful option, recycled tyres from scrapped cars, budget tyres sre a lot better than they used to be last set i bought for my series 1 were mabor i think & about £25 a pop, as now seen as a unpopular or unsual size means theyre cheap, nice car by the way puts the state of mine to shame, hey ho!

hi there- for what its worth, I got Avons, which are a mid-range brand, but UK made, and very well respected- Original equipment on TVR's and Caterhams. They have a good reputation and I paid £65 for a pair. If you intend to use your car regularly, getting better tyres is a good idea. Allegro tyres are small enough that the difference between cheapies and decent isn't that great.

Allegros are VERY sensitive to balancing, and some cheaper tyres (and especially used tyres) are often quite out of round.
cheers,
Brian

Quite the opposite; unpopular and unusual sizes are the ones that command stupid prices; our tyres are fitted to all kinds of vehicles old and yes even new, as well as trailers and the like, which is how we get them cheap Very Happy I think I paid £20-25 each for the ones on my Allegro, as well as the ones on my Maxi; looking to move up to 14" wheels and the tyre price jumps £10 each for the cheapest ones... More costly construction due to the lower profile.

If you want an extreme example of unpopular/unusual prices, look for metric tyres to fit an early Metro... Ouch!

We have an Allegro and a Princess running on Avon tyres (CR322, I think) and paid approx. £150 for a set of 4, fitted and balanced. With both of our cars we are on 70-series (low profile) tyres, so I would expect the standard 145 or 155-13 to be a little cheaper.

These tyres seem to give good levels of grip, low noise and are not wearing rapidly, so I would definitely recommend them. And, as Brian said, they are made in Britain, which to me is another plus point.

I seem to remember Mike Dean recommending them in one of his posts a while back, too.

I have nothing against using secondhand tyres, the main problem would be finding a decent set in the right size when you need them.

We got a new set of tyres for Lavinia a couple of weeks ago. Just reporting that they're much quieter than the pair of Dunlops and the other two (can't remember what) that were there before. Now she has Avon CR322 s all round. It's too early to say if they're more economical. I had them fitted by Fergal Bowles of "Fergie's Mobile Tyres". Reasonable prices and he came to us; I can recommend him. His stamp on the invoice says he does brakes and batteries also. He's based in Cricklewood, so if you're in North or West London you should check him out on 07886 007475.

If you read the full thread you'll learn of a minor problem and a very satisfactory resolution. Then again, maybe life's too short for that.

Mike.
