I've got no idea if the radio in my car is original, but it looks the part so I don't want to lose it.
However I do like my Radio 2 and Radio 4, so I'd like a working radio, maybe tucked away else where?
Do you reckon its feasable to add another radio? What about on the parcel shelf to the right of the driver under the dash? Would it be in the way of anything there? |

Right hand side of the dash, above the parcel shelf sounds good to me, and it is close to all of the wiring that would need to be tapped into
(permanent live is a purple wire, switched live from position 1 on the ignition switch is light green with a white stripe)
If you don't intend keeping the car long term, try to avoid cutting holes in the door trims or rear shelf to mount speakers, as your interior colour is nigh on impossible to find replacements for.
Mounting speakers under the rear seat is quite popular with Mini owners, and we have done it on one of our Allegros with quite satisfying results. |

Hia Louise,
I have fitted in my Allegros rear speakers under the parcel shelf, the mounts are even already there! all you need to do it remove the back bit of the rear seat, slide the shelf out fit the new ones in the hole. and then your sorted!
it sounds pretty good! like you have a bass box somewhere or something!
i fitted speaker mounts in the front on the front parcel shelf years ago, i took them to Sixthform and cut the a peice of wood the same size as the gap, attatched it at the bottom, and fitted the speaker into the front, i then bought some fabric the same colour and covered it, it looked the same and almost factory standard! if you want some photos i could possible hunt some out? i did it as part of my Alevel wood work so i might still have the file.... somewhere! lol

Hi Louise,
One option if you want to keep your original radio, Vintage Wireless Services in Sale, Manchester, can convert the MW or LW band to FM on most old car radios.
These clever chaps can also install a lead to take an iPod into one of these old radios. I had this done to the original Unipart radio fitted in my Allegro. The iPod sits in the glovebox and the car looks totally original. I had this done because I like Radio 4 and Radio 5 best (Test Match Special and the Football) so I couldn't decide which out of MW or LW to lose!
It is possible to have both modifications though...
Hope this helps,
Jon |

Shame about the digital display, but I like the idea.
I've just bought an old Audioline through eBay, plus period pod speakers and a glassmount aerial all for Murray; 36 years old and never been drilled/cut up for a radio, so I didn't want to start now Still, there's no guarantee this radio works yet... If it fails, I shall see how much reconditioning costs, and maybe grab one of those USB jobbies! _________________ ...that's why Allegro will look as good 5 years from now as it does today. |
