My steering wheel has started groaning, it appears to be coming from the top of the column, like its rubbing on something.
Just it just need lubricating or is a sign of something worse? |

It could be rubbing on the cowling - try removing the cowling and see if it stops. If it does, I'm not sure how to stop it, other than filing the cowling a bit to create some clearance, but at least you'll know it's nothing serious. _________________ Hell has frozen over...... the car formally known as 'Heap' is back on the road! |

What ever it is, it seems to have spurred the indicators to self cancel... sometimes |

If the steering wheel is rubbing against the cowl, there could be a problem with the steering column bush/es.
There are two bushes, one at the top of the outer column & one at the bottom of the outer column. If the top bush is worn excessively it could allow the inner column to 'drop' thus causing the steering wheel to foul the cowl & make the noise.
Grasp the steering wheel & try to move it side to side to see if there is excess movement, if there is you will have to renew the bushes.
Maybe if the car has not been driven much before you bought it, the components on the column under the steering wheel have dried-up, so if there's no excess movement/slack on the steering column, if you remove the top half of the cowl then squirt WD40 onto the steering column upper bush & self-cancelling bush, then squirt some onto the lower bush it might stop the noise, cheers, Laurence. |

Hi Louise,
Mine does this when the weather is cold. In summer when it warms up it never makes a sound - the front CV joints begin to clonk then instead.
