These appear to come loose after a while and need re-tightening, but don't seem to tighten very well. Do they damaged easily? Some nuts appear to tighten OK and others don't.

Anybody know why these were used? Is there any problem with replacing them with plain nuts and spring washers or nyloc nuts? That would hopefully stop them coming loose.
