Colin,
You have got to remember these critics were biased against the Allegro too
Don't take any notice of what they have said, like you said it was only what they were comparing the Allegro to at the time
If they were that bad then nobody would own a 1500 or 1750 Allegro which of course is definately not the case
I wouldn't even say the 1750 felt sportier than the 1300 just a little more refined when on the motorway as it has 5 gears and doesn't scream too much lol
You will love it when its going Mate ,don't worry

I've had both a maxi and a 1500 allegro, and neither had a 'bad' gearchange- that honour would go to a 3 speed column shift Rambler- it used to jam when going from 2 to 1 and I had to pop the hood and pry the linkage with a screwdriver. ....add that to vacuum wipers, 4 wheel drum brakes, and a rod operated clutch and it was rather a handful to drive in traffic. Yet, I loved that car...
...I also remember that the maxi's gearchange was quite similar to my old GSA and CX citroens- all were quite rubbery, notchy, and not too pleasant- but equally once you got the 'feel' not too bad, and at least you could change gears from inside the car. |

On the Renault, it was vague and rubbery, on the Fiat, the gate was so close and the lever so short that when changing from 2nd to 3rd, you had an equal chance of selecting 1st or 5th instead! |
I've never got on with the original Beetle gearchange, it seems to have a canted throw designed for LHD use and when you use that gearbox in an RHD territory all hell breaks loose! _________________ ...that's why Allegro will look as good 5 years from now as it does today. |

My own 1500 wasnt great .... but not awful
Fresh engine oil , felt a bit better , possibly physhological
While underneath renewing the leaky link rod oil seal ,I found 1 roll pin was broken , I bought a kit from a mini spares place ,
Its better still now
The exhaust mount near the gear rod was loose too
Change can be notchy but improves as it warms up , occasionally it drops out of second |

I never found either of the E series cars I've owned to be that bad and the Equipe changed gear nicely enough not to slow me down any
My dad's Maxi however was awful but it was a £50 car and I think it had the cable change system (K reg?)
Worst car I've owned for gear change was the 924 but that was a banger too. Very stiff at times and occasionally didn't want to go into gear.
My current car, the X3, has such a close position for 3rd and 5th I can easily get the wrong gear, especially if I'm in a hurry. Funny you don't hear such generalisations about BMWs! |
