After painting the NOS fuel tank, I took the float out to check it as the guage never went north of "E". I put a multimeter across it and it showed open curcuit. I opened the (variable resistor/potentiometer??) up and it became obvious that the wound wire wasnt..........It looks similar to every other little-metal-box-on-a-petrol-float from cars of that ilk.....Has any one ever adapted sender units from other cars? If not complete units then how about just the resistor part?

Perhaps the new paint on the tank is (now that it has been painted) preventing the body of the tank from making a good earth connection to the body of the Allegro.

Also the new paint on/around the sender locking-ring could be preventing the sender from making a good earth connection to the tank body.
When the sender is fitted to the tank, & then the locking-ring is fitted, both the sender & the tank in the locking-ring area should make a good electrical connection (earth) otherwise the gauge will never work even with a new sender unit.

Clear the paint from areas around the tank securing bolts & the sender locking-ring & once it's all in place & tested/working, then paint these areas if required.

no, sorry, what i meant was, The old tank leaked at the seam. So as i had to remove the tank to do the welding under neath and to fit the new tank anyway, I checked the float on the bench, connecting the ohm meter straight to it. When it registered open curcuit, thats when I opened it up and found the corrosion......

Dave,

The sender part number is, I believe, ADU3220.

If Colin Taylor, our spares genius, cannot help, if you do a Google search with this part number. It does come up with more than one supplier, but the first one I tried says it is £65!

I don't believe you will buy the resistor separately, and if you 'rewind' it you would need wire with the correct resistance value.

I was thinking something similar to this:

It looks very similar, almost llike it could be bent into the right shape. Failing that, take off the resistor and fit it to the allegro float. I mean, generally they`re all Smiths and all stabilized to 10v.....So, in theory...................
