Hello anybody that reads this.
Ive recently starting reconditioning/tweaking a 1750 twin carb from a series 3. Today I decided to flush the gearbox with paraffin and remove the oil pump to check for wear. However when I lifted the pump from the box I was greeted by some rather large shiney fragments of syncro teeth, which was nice! Im not too worried about this fact as I have 2 spare gearboxs to hand. What does worry me, is that this is a common fault and that i'll find my other 2 boxes are the same.
I havent yet started dismantling the box, so am unsure as too which syncro has bit the dust . + I am undecided as to whether reconditioning the box would be worth while in the great scheme of things as I have 2 on standby. Are there gearbox spares available
Any HELP is much appreciated!

Hi Sam, don't know much about getting parts for the 'E' series engine/gearbox, but I would suggest contacting a Maxi club or Maxi specialist advertising in Practicle Classics mag or similar. Had a look in my other haynes manual (allegro 1500/1750) & noticed that the A & E series boxes are similar in layout etc. I was apprehensive about stripping & rebuilding my A series box until I started work on my project engine & box, I watched a DVD (several times) on 'how to' build an A series engine/box called 'ultimate mini builder' www.minifilms.co.uk. It shows Bill Sollis telling Ian Stent how it's done. I zoomed in & freeze framed several times until I grasped the techniques & felt confident to put the box back together. I've now replaced the gear clusters with straight-cut gears, replaced the baulk rings, layshaft & all the bearings in the box so you may find it very useful to watch.
As you have found lumps of metal in the oil pump chances are the oil pump is shot (badly scored) & the ally parts (pistons & shells etc) have particles of gears embedded in them so think you'll need a mortician & dentist, cheers, Laurence. |
