Hi,
Given the current publicity surrounding the high price of fuel etc we thought this 35th anniversary year would be a great opportunity to do an "allegro economy run" along the lines of the once famous mobil economy run. Great fun I'm sure and very intresting too! SO we need YOU and your ALLEGRO!! (OR other classic would be just fine too!)

THE PLAN
We have a route of approx 40 miles planned centred around the hogs-back in Surrey (mixture of A roads/motorway etc) on AUG 17th.
Each car will be brim filled at the garage and then embark on the route - driving as economically as possible - and will then be re-filled on return. the MPG and ultimatly fuel cost per mile will then be worked out!

We have a 2008 New style Eco-multijet super economy fiat bravo diesel lined up as our "competition".

THE AIM
Firstly to have fun! also to find out just how ecomoical an allegro or old car canbe!
It is hoped and expected that various motoring mags will be intrested so you may well get your car in print as well. On a more serious note it may well (results permitting!) illustrate how an older car ISn't the planet threatenibg monster the press would have you think - our chance to counter the myth!

Mervyn, whos great idea this event is , will no doubt give us all some tips on fuel saving driving etc but if you have any then lets hear 'em!

By the way, I have heard that Keith Adams of Austin-Rover Web Rescource and Practical Classics fame is coming along to report for PC on the event.

I am the gulity party driving the new Fiat Eco Diesel!

Hi All,

Plans are well under way for this event . I am receiving help from the site manager where the run will start and finish. and trying to get some support from Exxon Mobil (Esso), and await their reply.
This event should give the Club some good publicity and I will post more news when it is available.

Many thanks George for bringing along the eco diesel option in the shape of the fiat bravo.....Its official MPG figures are quite stunning.

Its gonna give the allegros a hard act to follow but plans are a-foot to squeeze every last mile from the juice..... the fact that petrol is cheaper than diesel will help in the fuel cost per mile stakes.

The challange is to beat or at least match the fuel cost per mile of the fiat with an allegro......can we do it?? Could we even beat the actual MPG?

I understand Team Allegro have lined up a 1500cc single carb E series car / a facelift A plus 1300 and possibily 2 x 998cc A plus
cars too.

Have you any ideas on how we can increase the economy of the allegros?
Do you want to take part in your allegro?

My money would be on the 1.3 A+

Don't forget to turn the engine off and dip the clutch when going downhill, otherwise you will still be using fuel: every drop counts!

We'll let you off the re-payments and depreciation mate!!!

Not sure dipping the clutch is cheating - just tactics really!

A bit like thinner engine oil / over inflated tyres / keeping the windows shut / dumping all un-nessesary weight / re-tuning engine / going on a diet / slip streaming lorries etc etc!!!

A real challange but we have some real allegro tech anaoraks working hopeful miracles with their engines this summer to ensure a victory for Team allegro.

We'll see! Anyone offering odds?

Hi, I'm interested in entering the economy run, are there any rules & regs that need to be adhered to, or is it 'anything goes'? like carrying a spare can of petrol in the boot to top-up the tank enroute or do you take away the filler cap keys & check the boot? Is it 'driver only' or if you take a car full of friends is it cost per person per mile? if so I would be at a disadvantage immediately because I haven't got any friends, but if I did find some friends maybe they could push the car uphill. . .
or don't friends do that stuff?

Plans are still going ahead, and today I have had a good moan at Esso about not replying to two letters I sent them.
I have now e-mailed the parent company (ExxonMobil) in America to see if this gets a response!
Yes Laurence you could cheat but without putting an observer in every car we could not prevent this, and I think the fuel consumption achieved would make it pretty obvious. The route only passes one filling station and I know the manager!
The idea of this event was to obtain publicity, be a bit of fun and to just see what mile/gall are possible under normal road conditions.
I need to know soon who is able to come on the 17th August, so you can be posted details of the starting point etc.

I have received a few suggestions on of how to improve my cars economy.
1) Fit larger wheel on the back so the car is going down hill all the time.
2) Fill the car with helium balloons to reduce the its weight.
3) Remove the brake pads to reduce drag on the front wheels.
4) Partially block the exhaust so that less air and fuel are allowed into the engine.
5) Fit four 'space saving' wheels and tyres to reduce drag.

I am only joking!
