OK, approx. five years ago I changed my steering rack gaiters and added lubrication - I am certain it was oil, and was almost EP90. I still need to check if I have the remainder of the bottle left.
Thing is, I have now read in the BL workshop manual that a rack with a black seal uses oil, but a rack with a red seal uses grease.
My rack's seal is sort of pinky-peach coloured - so that'd be near enough red then.
Oil is leaking out from around the gaiters (one of which has perished badly and has a split) and leaking from under the loose-fitting seal, despite there being some tightly wrapped gaffer tape under it.
So, what do I do - try to clean out as much of the oil as possible and add the correct grease? Or have I committed a fatal error and need to ditch the rack and fit a replacement?
Advice please folks
