Hi,
My girlfriend's Rover 220 died yesterday (oil pump failure). So she is after an other modern car. Just on the off chance does anyone have a good car for sale? £500 to £2000 is the budget. We live near Kendal so it needs to be in the north really.
Thanks Dave |

Thinking outside the box a little, David, as you are coming down to the Midlands on a train for the NEC show, you could extend your car search to this part of the world.
Was the 220 petrol or diesel? |

Hi, Thanks for your replys.
The diagnosis from the garage was that the engine seized so we scrapped it. It was a diesel with 106000 on it and I had changed the cam belt, fuel pump belt and pulleys, pads and discs. I hope it wasn't my fault.
We had only paid 450 for it. Unfortunately she has now been put off older cars. Sadly I didn't have the time or space to swap the engine or investigate, the cam belt took long enough.
Sadly she has now been put off older cars and I think she will borrow some money to get a nearly new one, oh dear.
Thanks Dave |

Dave, she could become a trend setter and be one of the first on the road in the new MG3.
Prices from just £8399 on the road
There is an awful middle ground between older well-maintained cars and new-ish cars with a decent chunk of warranty left on them: only the brave or foolish will tread there |

Hi Paul,
I think your right the middle ground is a mine field.
We were thinking of going for 09 plate Corsa through a Vauxhall dealership. Parkers guide reckon about 5K. Do you think we should pay more and go for newer?
Thanks David |

I would have thought that buying a Vauxhall from a main dealer should give you a fairly decent backup in the event of a problem. If it is one private owner and supplied new by that particular dealer, even better. ARe Vauxhall dealers still running the 'Network Q' used car scheme? That used to give a fairly decent used car warranty.
Alternatively, consider a Hyundai or Kia from a main dealer with history: both came with a 5-year manufacturer's warranty, I believe. |

I agree with Paul's comments. The Kia warranty is seven years and may well become ten years soon, but this does end if the services are not carried out to the letter.
It is more dangerous today buying a car from a used car dealer or from a private person, especially after the theft of 'log book' from the DVLA a while back, and the increase in 'log book loans'. Even a vehicle HPI check does not always completely cover the purchaser.
After around five years, the repair cost of many faults will easily exceed the cars value, and this is happening more and more.
