I having a problem fitting the track rod end nut - the thread is just turning as I try to put the nut on.

Should this be a nyloc nut? That is what came off.

Can anybody suggest how I get the thread of the pin part to stay still as I tighten the nut?

Many thanks, Colin.

Yes the nut should be a 'nyloc' locking nut.

To stop the taper pin turning whilst you fit the nut, I use a long lever bar to put some 'weight' on the ball joint that forces the taper pin into the steering arm.

Hook the end of the bar into somewhere like an aperture in the bodywork & then over the top of the track rod end ball joint to wedge the taper pin in the steering arm hole, then tighten the nut 35lb f ft.

Thank you very much Laurence, that really helped.

However, I think the problem I had was due to being given the wrong nut to fit on, or perhaps just a dodgy nut. Even with the bar, and with me pretty much sitting on one end of it, the nut was stuck partially on. I had to cut through part of the nut to remove it, and then fitted a correct nut, which went on with no problems.

Glad to hear it's now sorted Colin, the rogue nut could have had 3/8" UNC (if 9/16" spanner fitted OK) thread instead of 3/8" UNF.

Entirely possible Laurence, it was a random nut that my sister found in the garage that happened to be the right size - and there are all sorts of old nuts of various types laying about in there.
