Typical isn't it? I was on course to get a spare steering rack this time last year but events conspired to prevent it & it totally slipped my mind... And now I need one!
It's for an S3, if that makes a difference? _________________ ...that's why Allegro will look as good 5 years from now as it does today. |

S3 rack is about a couple of inches longer than the early Allegro rack.
The trackrods on S3 are shorter though, so the overall length is the same.
Don't know what it would be like to swap early rack (S1) & later rack (S3).
I may try it one day to find out, at the moment (just got back from workshop!) I have stripped out an S3 rack to see if I can source new parts for it.
I have contemplated having a phosphur-bronze bush made to replace the plastic lined rack bush. I should be able to source bearings & seal etc. |

Thanks both; my car is currently 3rd in the queue at the mechanics, and should be getting the old rack removed early next week if all his current plans come to fruition, so "urgent" is relative - not for a few days at least but before the end of the month
I've spoken to Colin Taylor & we have the earlier type of rack available as NOS, and apparently Andy Cripps and others have had these fitted onto later vehicles with no noticeable difference in handling.
If I can source a 2nd hand one then that would be nice, but at least I know that worst case I can get one from club spares in a week or so _________________ ...that's why Allegro will look as good 5 years from now as it does today. |
