HELP!!

Bit of a desperate plea, I need the cast metal block which secures the mirror to the door. The mirrors are the chrome type with a grub screw which tightens the mirror against the block, which is held to the door by two self tapping screws.

Does anyone have one of these as a spare?

Please let me know

Cheers

Matt

If it's any help, the Vanden Plas (incl. S3) door mirror arrangement is the same as S2 Allegro.

While not directly "handed", there is a wedge shape to the plinths that leads to them being fitted a specific way around. There's multiple types of block, some metal & some plastic, most are interchangeable without much grief. You'll be hard pushed to find the block for saleseparate from the plinth though (some plinths have blocks built in, but most I've seen like this are intended for Minis which are unlikely to be suitable.)

I used a set just like this to fit a nearside mirror to my old Maxi: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MG-Door-Mirror-Mount-/310329563860 (edited due to finally remembering the true facts!)

Have you lost the whole thing? If you've got a metal one with "ears" & one of them has broken, you can just turn the block around on the plinth & it'll be perfectly secure - I ran a mirror like this on an ADO16 for months with no ill effects. And if you have a mount on one side of the car but not the other, and you're a bit handier than I am, you could try crafting one yourself from a sufficiently hard material.

Sadly, although I have a good supply of spare mirrors I don't have any spare mounts.

Yeah, late VPs used the same black plastic mirrors as S3s; IIRC it was a beyond-saving S3 VP that allowed me to complete my first pair of S3 mirrors. However, if the car has either chrome mirrors or black LE/Equipe-style mirrors, then they would have interchangeable mounts. S1s would be very likely to have the same bits as needed on an S2.

Hi

I found the mirror unbroken on the verge, which is lucky. It appears that the ears have broken off the mounting (metal fatigue?) as It wasn't hit by anything, it just dropped off whilst driving.

Sadly as both ears have gone I can't turn it around, so if the ACI spares Guru hasn't got one I'll try one of these plastic things. Not sure how effective it will be as it doesn't appear to have the wedge shape to locate the mirror. Does it fit yours OK?

cheers

Matt

I'm not sure I entirely follow you. Which wedge are you referring to?

The block in the middle of the eBay image replaces the "ears"-equipped (or deficient) metal lump, and has what should be an identical profile.

The oval (shown in profile at the top) should match the profile of the base of the mirror, it's not 100% necessary but it can help prevent paint damage & vibration - and if this isn't already present, it may be a contributing factor towards the failure of your old mount.

This oval is thicker on one side than the other, the thick side should face away from the window. The legs can be cut off if they won't fit on your Allegro; they are intended to bunch up within the panel, but if you have a captive nut already fitted then they serve no purpose.

By Wedge shape I mean ears. The ears act against the wedge shape inside the base of the mirror.

I have the rubber oval shape still attached to the car, the only part that has failed is the metal block with ears, everything else is present.

Ah okay - then yes, the middle ingot-shaped block should be a seamless replacement for your broken metal bit. I know it doesn't look quite the same but it is designed to fulfill the same role for Desmo, Tex etc. mirrors.
