|
|
Hi
I'm a new Allegro owner and, I need some advice, I'd like to fit a rev counter to my car in place of the blank next to the speedo.
I acquired a few spare bits from a friend who owned an allegro many years ago and amongst this stuff is an allegro rev counter. It seems to be of the same era to my car (a 1977 Special) as the numbers on the dial face match those of my speedo and the needle is the same type and colour.
I've had the front off the instruments on the car and I can see that the plastic housing on my car is not deep enough to accommodate the rev counter so I'm guessing that there must be two types. The Rev counter has what appears to be 3 connections. A red, a black and a yellow, each on a threaded stud.
Now can anyone tell me, where I can get the other type of housing that's deeper for the rev counter? Do I need a different printed Circuit to make this work?
If the red is a + ve feed and the Black is earth, should the yellow coil feed attach to the coil - ve or dizzy?
Also does anyone have any tips about replacing the speedo cable? Is it straight forward?
Many thanks.

If it is a genuine S2 rev counter, it's a very rare item indeed! However, the fact nothing seems to be lining up suggests that it may be an early S3 item instead, which used similar digits to the S2s yet a different dashpod which would, as you have surmised, require a different circuit sheet.
Hopefully someone else will be along soon to expand on this _________________ ...that's why Allegro will look as good 5 years from now as it does today. |

Thanks Richard. Having never seen the inside of an early S3 I don't know the differences.
I've been rummaging through this load of spares and I have found what appears to be a new circuit sheet in an envelope. Result! There seems looking at to be two connections for a dial on that side.
So what I'm looking for is the white plastic housing that is deeper to accommodate the clocks?
I'll try and show some pictures of what I've got here plus the part numbers that are stamped on the circuit sheet and on the clock. Hopefully this means something to somebody. _________________ Fleet

I know Colin Taylor, our Spares Secretary, has been trying to get the parts together to fit one of these himself; if you emailed him descriptions, part numbers, and/or pictures, he may be able to confirm or deny whether these parts will fit as you hope, but no promises.
Contact details for Colin can be found in any recent Quartic, and probably on a few threads here in the forums _________________ ...that's why Allegro will look as good 5 years from now as it does today. |

If your existing instruments and the rev counter both have orange needles then the rev counter is definitely a series 2 type. If the needles are white, then as Richard says it might be from a series 3.
Being a 1977 car I would suspect orange, I think white needles were introduced sometime in 1978.
The correct instrument pod would only have been fitted to the 1750HL (I think!) so would be very rare. You may have to fabricate a mounting into your existing pod. _________________ Hell has frozen over...... the car formally known as 'Heap' is back on the road! |

Crikey! So this battered little box contains rocking horse poo. Now I'm scared to touch it lol. _________________ Fleet
